Introduction
Greetings prospective Mage, my name is Kargoz and I’ve been playing World of Warcraft for a long time. Starting my journey in 2004, I’ve since leveled multiple classes to 60 on various Vanilla realms, including Nostalrius, Anathema, Zeth’kur, Lightbringer, and most recently on Northdale. I’ve learned through the years that leveling is probably my favorite aspect of the game, particularly speed leveling. The amazing thing about World of Warcraft: Classic is that leveling is a huge part of the overall experience!
In order to make this guide as accurate as possible I consulted multiple reputable Mages including North (Twitch Streamer), Tmugsy (Twitch Streamer), and the Amazing Gnome Mage Infra! Mages are strong levelers capable of AoE Grinding an indefinite amount of mobs at once using their unique abilities and talents. While they do have a slow start from 1-20, Mages start to pull way ahead of the pack once AoE Grinding comes online. AoE Grinding is by far the most effective strategy you can utilize if you want to maximize your XP / Hr. A Mage’s Solo Target Kill Time vs. Downtime is mediocre as you can’t front load spells as efficiently as other classes that have DoTs and you will find yourself drinking after 2-3 mobs. Ideally you only quest as a Mage when transitioning zones then continue to AoE grind in a new spot, however on a crowded PvP server plans can change quick.
In the latter stages of leveling, Mages get these monstrous XP / Hr peaks if left uninterrupted in places such as the Pirate Cove in Tanaris, or Sorrow Hill in Western Plaguelands. However, the key word is “uninterrupted”. If you are on a crowded PvP server and you are not ahead of the pack, it becomes increasingly difficult to AoE grind. There will be intense competition for mobs and you are highly susceptible to being griefed or ganked forcing you to reset your pulls. In this scenario Mage leveling speed slows down considerably.

As a Spellcaster you will always have a 1% chance to miss with your spells.
Against a Target of the Same Level: You have a 4% chance to miss. 3% Hit is needed for cap.
Against a Target 1 Level Higher Than You: You have a 5% chance to miss. 4% Hit is needed for cap.
Against a Target 2 Levels Higher Than You: You have a 6% chance to miss. 5% Hit is needed for cap.

Mobs generally have a 5-Minute Respawn without Dynamic Respawns. This addon will show you not only a timer but where the spawn locations are around you on your minimap.XP / Hr Tracker

Allows you to track when mobs are in range of Nova, when you are precisely 36 yards away for Max range Frostbolt or Blizzard. Very useful.Drinking While Moving
One trick you can implement if you are trying to push the limits of your efficiency is to:
Move between ticks in your Drinking based Mana Regeneration.
This strategy is best used when you have excess water and you are transitioning to a new and improved water source.
To use this method you need to download an energy timer such as “Energy Watch” which will track any sort of tick. In this case we will be tracking mana regeneration.
You will drink right before the energy bar fills up (Apx. 90% Completion) then move in the interim time between the following 90% completion.Mage Specific Tips

Ideally you should AoE grind in groups.
Mana is everything in Classic and Clearcasting Procs are INSANE.
Always keep your Rank 1 Frostbolt / Fireball bound as they can prove to be useful. They have less casting time and provide the same Slow and DoT effect just less damage.
Create Stopcasting Script Macros for Time Sensitive Abilities.Life 1-10
Alternate between using Fireball or Frostbolt based on new ranks of the spells up to when you get your first rank of Frost Bite then 100% Frostbolt.
Get a Wand ASAP (Lesser Magic Wand has an INSANE 11.3 DPS)
Skip Training Arcane Missiles unless you plan on going Imp Missiles build which we will discuss later.
Rotation is: 3x Frostbolt / Fireball then squeeze in a Wand shot if you have time. If mob is close to dead then continue wanding till death. If it still has substantial HP, Proceed to run then Frost Nova. Continue to run during Nova GCD then cast 1-2x Frostbolts / Fireballs and Wand to Death.Infra Single Target Frostbite

Notes About This Spec:
Race to Lvl 14 through Mob tagging - this is when you get Arcane Explosion. At this point ditch group then begin AoE Grinding with Arcane Explosion, Nova, and start integrating Flamestrike at 16.
At 20 Depending on if Clearcasting is Buffed or Nerfed you will either respec Frost or keep your Arcane talents and start investing into the Frost tree. If Clearcasting has a chance of proccing on every mob you hit you will stay Arcane if it has a chance to proc once per spell you will go Frost.
Get Permafrost before Nova for CoC kiting ASAP.
Use Rank 1 Cone of Cold AoE Grinding Method Fishing for Clearcast Procs.

Notes About This Spec:
Start AoE Grinding ASAP starting at level 20. ST with Imp. Arcane missiles will be more efficient up till that point.
5/5 Imp Arcane Missiles Pre-20: The assumption with this choice is that dealing with the occasional resist is not going as problematic as having pushback on your spells. Start Using Arcane Missiles when you have minimum 3/5 points into the talent = 60% chance to avoid interruption.
Ideally you AoE Grind in Groups and start solo AoE grinding dungeons starting mid 40s in Maraudon.
When AoE grinding difficult mobs downrank your AoE spells to get Clearcasting Procs than use higher ranks for maximum efficiency.
2/3 Imp. Blizzard depending on how server is. If 3/3 will prevent your CoC slow from overwriting then you will stay at 2/3 since the slow falling off can be a huge liability that will get you killed.
On Potentially skipping Ice Barrier, Ice Block till Clearcasting is online: “What’s the point, If you’re going for the money - you better not fuck up” LOL love this guy.AoE Grinding
AoE Grinding can be achieved as a Mage through multiple methods. The most known Method is using Frost Nova to root mobs in place and to burn them down with Imp. Blizzard. Another method is to Flamestrike -> Nova -> Arcane Explosion mobs down. Another method is to kite mobs around with simple Cone of Cold rank 1 fishing for Clearcasting procs then using higher ranks of CoC or Blizzard. There are multiple ways to open an infinite value loop as long as your mana permits.
Here is a sample breakdown of a potential AoE Grinding Rotation GCD by GCD:
Pull: If 40+ Start Mounted up with Ice Barrier On. If you are under 40 then Face Pull / Wand / R1 Fire Blast to gather targets.
Control: Once gathered, use Cone of Cold to Slow all mobs and if any resist immediately use Frost Nova as a backup.
Create Space: Start Strafing Away or Blink Away to Create Distance (Ideally don’t Blink as the mana cost scales).
Kill: Use 2x Blizzard as they waddle in your direction and rinse and repeat using CoC or Nova to Control:AoE Grinding Tips
When surveying a new area to AoE grind try killing a single mob with your combo to get a sense of its power level. If you are able to kill the mob in 4 Blizzards or less you are probably in good shape.
Use your Wand / R1 Fireblast to gather mobs that are spread out. Get creative with your positioning to gather them within range of your Frost Nova.
Do not pull packs of mobs with even a SINGLE ranged damage dealer. Always surgically dispatch of caster mobs first before starting your pull. Even a single attack can ruin your Blizzard costing you a ton of mana and potentially your life because you no longer have the resources to kill the pack.
Absolutely NO Frostbite talent. This will mess you up in a huge way freezing mobs randomly out of range of your Novas and Blizzards. You have to commit to either the Single Target Spec or the AoE Grinding Spec.
If after your 2nd Blizzard Mobs are closing the distance and Frost Nova isn’t fully off of CD use Cone of Cold to create more space. Keep strafing away for the couple seconds you need for a new Nova.
Generally you shouldn’t use Ice Armor as the slow effect will mess up your timings, however, if you are having trouble surviving you can use it as well as Mana Shield to increase survivability at the expense of efficiency.Non AoE Grinding Life 10-60
Wands are incredibly strong weapons that can be toggled on before a GCD finishes cooling down. Make sure you integrate wanding alongside your spells to find a harmonious balance spending and generating resources
Skip Training Dampen Magic, Slowfall, Detect Magic, Flamestrike, Amplify Magic, Ranks of Fireball, Blizzard Past R1
Use Frost Ward / Fire Ward when facing Frost or Fire damage. They’re cheap and provide a shield. They share a CD.
Rotation is: 3x Frostbolt (4x When you have 2/2 Arctic Reach 3/3 Permafrost) then squeeze in a Wand shot if you have time. Proceed to run then Frost Nova. Continue to run during Nova GCD then at that point make use of Shatter effect. Cast 2x Frostbolts and Wand to Death.Stat Priority
